The Republic of Kazakhstan is taking important steps to manage its water resources through the consideration of a draft Concept for the Development of the Water Resources Management System.

At a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a draft Concept for the Development of the Water Resources Management System for 20232029 was approved. The goal of the document is to address the issues of preserving and utilising the country‘s water resources in a balanced way, so as to meet the needs of economic sectors and the environment. It was highlighted that the Concept includes four main objectives: improving efficiency, water quality, resilience and water management. To achieve these goals, by 2029 Kazakhstan plans to upgrade and automate the network of main and interfarm canals, conduct a multifunctional survey of all major hydraulic structures, install additional hydrological posts, revise water supply tariffs and introduce an automated discharge monitoring system.

After discussion, the draft Concept was approved and the Prime Minister has instructed relevant departments to finalize the document, taking into account any proposals raised.
