In 2022, coal mining companies in Kazakhstan produced 113.9 million tonnes of coal. Compared to 2021, this was an increase of 1.9%, according to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. At the end of 2022, coal exports totalled 32.5 million tonnes; 11.03 million tonnes were used for domestic needs and for the population, 64.4 million tonnes were for energy complexes, and 5.97 million tonnes were sent to industrial enterprises,” said Zhanat Igisinov, head of the coal industry department of the MIIR RK. The Ministry of Investment and Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, based on data from local executive bodies, has drawn up a plan for the demand for coal products for domestic needs and the population for 20222023. According to the plan, consumption is expected to be 9 million tonnes of coal, 2.2 million tonnes of which will be used for communal life and 6.8 million tonnes for the population. As of 23 January 2023, 7.6 million tonnes had been delivered to the regions, which is equal to 84.1% of the supply required. Igisinov added that in order to meet the goals of the heating season and avoid shortages, the department issued an order to limit road exports of coal during the heating season from 30 September 2022 for a period of six months.
